SYPOSIUM OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this program, attendees should be able to: • Understand the historic background and current progress in the diagnosis and treatment of hypertension • Recognize the common causes of hypertension • Discuss recent trial results and their impact on the pharmacotherapeutic management of hypertension • Outline the advantages and disadvantages of various hypertension pharmacotherapies used in the management of hypertension, including beta blockers, renin inhibitors, and combination drug therapies • Discuss dose-response curves for common antihypertension pharmacotherapies • Understand the importance of medication compliance, outline the risks of patient nonadherence, and describe methods for physician evaluation and detection of patient nonadherence to therapy regimens • Discuss the merits and methods of drug combinations in the management of hypertension ACCREDITATION STATEMENT The American Society of Hypertension, Inc. is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education to physicians.
